Green hydrogen: from Mallorca to Morocco.

The green economy as a cornerstone in the new world order promotes sustainability and environmental protection on a global level. This economy advocates for the conservation and protection of natural resources while fostering innovation and the adoption of clean and sustainable technologies such as solar energy, wind energy, biotechnology, and green hydrogen technology.

The “Power to Hydrogen Mallorca” project is a perfect example of the importance and necessity of this economy. This project started with the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain. Installed in Lloseta, this plant is part of the objective to decarbonize the island. The project consists of an electrolysis plant, the development of two photovoltaic plants that power it, and a green hydrogen station on the island. Spain, with projects like the one we have on the island, aims to be a pioneer in exporting green hydrogen. Under the umbrella of Hydeal España, it aims to be part of the world’s largest renewable hydrogen hub. The goal is to supply green hydrogen for the production of steel, ammonia, green fertilizers, and other low-carbon industrial products. The ambition of this plan is to bring one kilogram of this green hydrogen to the market for 1.5 euros.

Step by step, Morocco has positioned itself as a leader in the green economy through its various renewable energy plans. As a country that depended on foreign sources for 90% of its energy needs, it adopted a plan to produce 52% of its energy by 2030. According to the “Green Future Index” publication from the prestigious MIT, Morocco currently leads the energy transition and tops clean energy production in North Africa and the Middle East. The Moroccan state-owned company OCP, a world leader in phosphate exports, recently presented its 2023-2027 green investment program. This new program aims to increase fertilizer production capacity with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. The group aims to power all its facilities with clean energy in the next five years through investments in solar and wind technology. As the main importer of ammonia, the country’s goal is to rid itself of that dependence and replace it with a major investment in green ammonia and green hydrogen.

The war in Ukraine has opened up new horizons for cooperation worldwide. Established economic power positions have been reversed. Protecting the environment and freeing oneself from gas dependence are priorities that have been installed on the agendas of almost all countries. Projects like the one in Lloseta, Mallorca, or plans like the one from OCP in Morocco, pave the way for new alliances between the two countries and their companies. Could 2023 be the year of energy cooperation between Spain and Morocco?
